‘No Fly, No Scan’ & No Representation for Australians

Australian Federal Government Media Release – 5th February 2012

From July this year, a new national tax – without prior political mandate or representation – is being applied to international flights leaving Australia. We’re not talking about a Carbon Tax, but a payment of your civil liberty for the Right to Fly overseas from this country. A full-body scan, implemented already in other Western countries and up until now ”trialled” at Australia’s two major airports, Melbourne & Sydney. It comes without the option of a patdown by a security officer, as is “available” in America, and without a major security incident ever occuring on an international flight leaving from Australia.

If ever you were considering making a stand for your civil liberties in this country, this is it - and you can make a difference. In Western Australia, we’ve seen proposed and defeated in State Parliament “Stop & Search” Laws, which otherwise would’ve seen popular areas of Perth be policed in a totalitarian manner historically witnessed only in socities declining into dictatorship. This Federal measure, without election mandate, would see all Australian citizens who wish to travel from this country via the air be subjected to a “full body scan,” a digital image of the human body which is claimed by the Australian Labor-Greens Party Government not to take a naked image of the person, despite numourous examples overseas proving otherwise.

This scan emits radiation which despite what level is actually emitted – and we can only hope this is closely monitored throughout use – should not be a non-negotiatable part of the most reasonable way of traveling from this borderless country. Yet from July, all innocent Australians wanting to travel to another country, whether seeking to reunite family ties, seeking medical treatment, or having attained professional work which requires travel, will have to submit themselves to a dose of radiation and an invasion of their privacy.
